What Is a Crane Sheave?

Sheaves are an essential component of the crane, rigging, and lifting industries. A sheave is a grooved pulley wheel used to guide and support wire rope, synthetic rope, cable, or chain through a lifting system. Sheaves redirect the line of pull, multiply mechanical advantage through reeving, and reduce the input force required at the hoist drum to lift a given load.

Crane sheaves are typically machined from alloy steel, aluminum, or engineered thermoplastics such as cast nylon (often specified by trade names like Nylatron or MC901). Material selection depends on load rating, wire rope diameter, ambient conditions, and the rope-to-sheave (D/d) ratio required to achieve target rope service life.

Sheaves are produced in a wide range of configurations:

• Single-groove sheaves guide one wire rope or cable and are common in single-part line hoists, jib cranes, and lighter lifting assemblies
• Double-groove sheaves carry two parts of line and are widely used in load blocks and reeved systems where additional mechanical advantage is needed
• Multiple-groove (multi-sheave) hook blocks support 4-part, 6-part, 8-part, and higher reeving arrangements found on mobile cranes, crawler cranes, and offshore lifting equipment
• Equalizer sheaves balance rope tension across multiple parts of line at the dead-end of a reeving system
• Boom point and boom tip sheaves redirect the hoist line at the head of telescopic and lattice booms

Normal Duty vs. Heavy Duty Crane Sheaves

When specifying sheaves for a crane or rigging system, it's important to understand the distinction between normal duty and heavy duty designs — the wrong choice shortens rope life, accelerates groove wear, and can create a safety risk.

Normal duty sheaves are intended for lighter loads and routine handling. They typically incorporate protective guards and are well-suited to applications involving manual deployment, higher line speeds, or duty cycles where shock loading is minimal. You'll find normal duty sheaves on workshop jib cranes, light overhead cranes, and general-purpose hoists.

Heavy duty sheaves are engineered for rugged service. They're built with thicker rim sections, larger bearings or bushings, and tighter dimensional tolerances to withstand demanding conditions heavy lifting, hazardous material handling, die forging operations, foundry and steel mill environments, port and container handling, offshore lifting, and any application where shock loading, high duty cycles, or severe environmental exposure are the norm. Heavy duty sheaves are the standard choice for critical hoisting operations where reliability, rope life, and operator safety cannot be compromised.
